News text / Meta descriptionThe Russian aggression has destroyed or damaged large areas of Ukraine. The country's reconstruction will take years, and it is not an easy task. In a recent publication, adelphi offers several principles for the green rebuilding of Ukraine.Mariupol, Kharkiv and other cities in Ukraine will require extensive reconstruction. Some smaller towns will need to be rebuilt from the ground up. Hunderts of thousands of Ukrainians require new homes. Russian missiles have repeatedly attacked the infrastructure of Ukraine, including roads, railway stations, airports and train stations. The damage to Ukraine's agriculture sector is estimated at six billion euros. The majority of state-owned coal mines have been rendered unprofitable or occupied. The Ukrainian people continue to defend their country, and fight for their survival.It is important to ask: Is it presumptuous or premature to consider seriously the rebuilding of Ukraine's infrastructure destroyed by the war? This reconstruction should be environmentally friendly? These questions are not necessary, as the reconstruction is already underway in areas that have been freed from Russia such as Kiev and Chernihiv. In fact, it is not just a question of rapid reconstruction, but also the future of Ukraine's economy. Ukraine will present its Recovery Plan in summer 2022 at a Lugano international conference. The conference agreed on transparency and sustainability as guiding principles for Ukraine's rebuilding. Green reconstruction will help Ukraine achieve its social, economic and geopolitical objectives: becoming energy independent of Russian fossil fuels; accelerating integration with the EU and reaping the benefits of the socialist market economy.
